Dr. Durning was recognized by the Hubbard Award Committee for his extensive contributions to the field of assessment in medical education through leadership, scholarship and service.
"With over 400 peer-reviewed publications, 50 invited chapters, and seven edited textbooks, and has received more than $15 million in funding over the years, Dr. Durning has been an innovator and prolific contributor to research that will have considerable impact upon the teaching and assessment of clinical reasoning and the predictive validity of clinical competence examinations, now and in the future."

Impact
Steven is well known for his exploration of context in the process of clinical reasoning and for detailing the effects of situated cognition. He is a pioneer in the assessment of educational outcomes over time and is the founder and principal investigator of the USUHS Long-Term Career Outcome Study (LTCOS).
In addition to his role in LTCOS, he is also Professor of Medicine at the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine and Director of its Center for Health Professions Education; the Deputy Editor of Academic Medicine; and was the first individual from the U.S. to be on the executive committee for the Association for Medical Education in Europe (AMEE).
